Five beautiful and ethical underwear brands for Valentine’s Day

If you’re thinking about getting a lingerie gift for yourself of a loved one for Valentine’s Day, but don’t want to buy into some of the more problematic areas of the fashion industry, Here are five British brands making gorgeous undies in an ethical and sustainable way.

1) Studio Pia
Describing their lingerie as luxury with a conscience, the team at Studio Pia passionately believe that opting for ethical should never mean sacrificing style. This ethos runs from the peace silk they use in their bras and the recycled card used in their swing tags, to the British artisans who sew each piece with precision and care. My favourite style from their Valentine’s edit has to be Raina (see image above), with its stunning graphic embroidery.

2) Lara Intimates
The founders of Lara have always believed in making their lingerie as sustainable as possible, ensuring that all of the materials they use are sourced responsibly. As well as using reclaimed fabrics, the elastics in Lara Intimates lingerie are all made and dyed by a responsible supplier in England, their garment labels are made in the UK, and all packaging is made locally by eco-friendly sources. For Valentine’s Day, I’d suggest checking out their gorgeous hot pink styles (see right).

3) Ayten Gasson
Founder and designer Ayten Roberts is well-known for her use of upcycled vintage Nottingham lace – highlighting the traditional skills which the UK was once celebrated for – and she regularly uses sustainable fabrics like modal, bamboo, peace silk and organic silk. Also, every lingerie item is lovingly produced by hand in Ayten’s Brighton boutique. My pick for Valentine’s is the Cara blue silk lingerie.

All Buttress and Snatch lingerie and swimwear is custom made to order in their workshop in Hackney, London. They buy their materials from UK suppliers and support British manufacturing every step of the way. For a cheeky V-Day gift, I’d go for their Tabitha turquoise sheer dots high waist knickers.

5) Luva Huva
Making beautiful ethical underwear, Luva Huva ensure that all of their textiles are selected with care and consideration for people and the planet. They are committed to using local suppliers and producers, and to using remnants, vintage and end of line trims. My valentine’s selection from their site would be the Emily rouge bra and brief set.
