I’m approaching the end of my A-to-Z of Accessories and V just had to be for Vintage. The problem is that I’m not a massive expert on vintage accessories and so this post is going to just be a very brief one on recommendations of places where you can find out more about pre-loved accessories and where to buy then. The best source of information has to be Naomi Thompson and Liz Tregenza‘s excellent book Style Me Vintage, Accessories. It’s filled with gorgeous photos and useful tips for buying good quality items that will last. It’s definitely a great place to start if, like me, you know nothing!
Great places to buy online are Candy Says, Scarlet Rage Vintage and Janne’s Vintage. If you’re not sure what to start looking for, think of items that could easily be incorporated into your current wardrobe – perhaps sunglasses, a silk scarf or a brooch to go on your coat. The wonderful Retro Chick has a love of vintage and vintage-style accessories and you can find many useful posts on her blog about accessories in general, or more specific types like brooches, scarves, bangles, shoes and even how to organise your collection so that you can find things easily!
My only personal recommendation would be to visit the vintage jewellery counter in John Lewis Oxford Street if you’re in the area, as the staff are very knowledgeable and it’s a great place to start off if you’ve no idea what you’re looking for. After that, you’ll have a few brand names to search for on eBay/Etsy and an idea what good condition looks like. Since spotting a Lea Stein brooch in there, I’ve now become a bit obsessed but still can’t decide which style I like the best! Do let me know in the comments if you have any useful tips on buying vintage accessories.
