At the start of 2015, I sat down with a small group of friends to complete the Year Compass. It was a great way to reflect on the previous 12 months and look at what you’d like to get out of the next 12, plus making time to sit down and do it in the company of others ensures that it is an extremely productive exercise. If I’d done it alone, my planning would have been put off or cut short, but spending the evening with tea and friends meant that I got pretty much everything done in one go.
I’m back at work today – sat at the desk of the day job that has not only paid the bills but has also inspired me to learn, research and value my passions. Although working in admin might not seem like the best career option, I have realised now that it was a choice. Admin roles help me use skills that I’ve come to realise not everyone has, plus every industry needs administrators so I have been able to transfer these skills to different roles until I found a ‘best fit’. Working at a world famous fashion college, part of a large arts university, means that I can spend my time surrounded by inspirational people and can benefit from the type of staff development I wouldn’t get elsewhere. My current job title may be PA to the Dean, but my experience over the last 5 years at London College of Fashion means so much more than that.
This year, I won’t be planning to escape admin. This year, I’m going to embrace it. Ambition means different things to different people and it’s not necessarily a bad thing to not want to ‘climb the ladder’. I’m more organised than I think I am, and that can only be a good thing as it means I can use my spare time to my advantage. Starting with completing the Year Compass for 2015-2016.
