Feminism Friday: Who Made Your Pants?

Becky John of Who Made Your PantsI know a lot of people ask who made their clothes these days, but does anyone really know? Unless you are close to someone with excellent sewing skills who has produced your entire wardrobe, the answer is probably no. I do know who made a large handful of lovely lacy things in my underwear drawer, however, as they came from the sewing machines of Who Made Your Pants? Not only do they employ ethical working practices and use upcycled fabrics, but I reckon they’re pretty damn feminist too.

At their open day back in 2012, I got to experience the awesome power of WMYP first hand. Not only did I get to meet Becky and her team of wonderful women who spend their days sewing stretch lace into gorgeous undies, but I also got to join them for an exciting lunch (everyone brought something they’d made themselves, to share) and I made some new friends, including the lovely Elly who has since joined Irreverent Dance and is chief costumier for the annual showcase performance. I enjoyed spending time with wonderful women who are helping others, setting up businesses or who are learning the skills to become independent. Women who are being creative and caring but are using those skills in interesting new ways and won’t let anything get between them and their goals. It was a supportive and inspirational environment that the world needs more of. For a bit more of an insight, check out this great video on the brand from last year.

Of course, as someone who writes about underwear a lot, it’s also important to also remember those wonderful pants. WMYP currently have a 3 for 2 offer on a great selection of their stylish comfortable pants. It’s only running until 30th September, so snap them up fast. There are some fantastic styles and colours on offer that are all hand made with love and care in Southampton, and they’re sure to liven up your day as well as your wardrobe. Which one’s your favourite?
