I’m rather late with this month’s Lust List, but it’s a very exciting one indeed. I visited the open studio event for the BA (Hons) Fashion Contour students at London College of Fashion yesterday afternoon, and saw so many wonderful designs that I knew straight away I was going to need more than one blog post to share them with you all.
The students drew their inspiration from dancers, sportswear, architecture, burlesque, cities, beaches, bondage, strong women and even rodeos, with collections aimed at mainstream markets as well as plus size, luxury, sports and mastectomy customers. Look out for another post later this week but, to whet your appetite, here are five of my favourite collections from this year’s graduating cohort that really grabbed my attention.
1) Lulu Pettinger underwired sling bra and high waisted knickers
I chatted to Lulu about her beautiful hand drawn print, inspired by architectural wood carvings, which was perfectly placed on silk georgette panels in her final collection. The silk satins are sumptuous, the covered buttons divine and the high-waisted shapes are absolutely stunning (see top image). This was definitely my favourite collection on the day!
2) Serina Alayed “Rebecca” set
Having produced an entire brand concept called SÉ RINA, aimed at the ultimate city girl, Serina Alayed talked to me about her striking lingerie and body jewellery which is inspired by New York and London. Her strong choice of fabrics and trim, plus manipulation with pleating and minimalist metallic embroidery made this debut collection really stand out.
3) Ellen Goldie’s Hummingbird mastectomy lingerie
Having already read about it, I was very excited to chat to Ellen about her ultra feminine mastectomy lingerie collection that she has created for the luxury market (see left). With super soft fabrics and no uncomfortable side seams or underwires, the first Hummingbird collection features beautiful eyelash lace and fashion focused styling.
4) Amelia Firth-Waugh’s Lunar Cowl Crop and Hockey Knickers
Amelia’s stunning all white collection features bold shapes and embroidery inspired by New York architecture with hidden beaded constellations. Although the pleating and corsetry are strong, my favourite pieces are the super wearable cowl crop top and delightfully named hockey knickers (see above). Her brand, Temper Lingerie, is launching for SS16.
5) Emily Pettman surfwear
Emily has designed a collection of women’s surfwear called Amor A Mar, inspired by surfing holidays in Portugal. The print is reminiscent of Portuguese tiling patterns, with the addition of a tiny shell motif to bring it all back to the beach, and features on fuss free lingerie for under your wetsuit, a simple but stylish bikini, and loungewear for post-surf relaxation.
