I’m a sucker for beautiful, well made British design and am always keen to share. So, when an email popped into my inbox this week from Bristol-based British accessories designer Tovi Sorga, the words ‘printed leather’ grabbed my attention and I quickly clicked the link to his website, which is filled with beautiful bright prints on gorgeous leather and made into simple practical accessories.
The clutch and tote bags are instantly desirable, but the gadget covers and wallets make his beautiful designs available at a more affordable price point. My wish list now contains the Floral Reflections clutch bag, the Tropical and Pineapple iPad case, the Decoupage Roses smartphone case and the Japanese Phoenix Tattoo clutch bag (see photo)… and it was tough restricting myself to a list of just four!
According to the press release, Tovi Sorga invented a unique printing method that depends upon using only the finest porous calfskin, sourced primarily from Britain’s few remaining tanneries. His technique creates rich saturated colours and astonishing detail, which is evident from the photographs, and a also provides a sensuous finish which I look forward to experiencing in real life. Each product is designed and printed in-house, and then hand-stitched on a vintage Singer sewing machine – there’s even a photo of it on his website!
The prints on these leather accessories are truly stunning and one of these bags would definitely attract many compliments on every use. I was particularly taken by the print on the gorgeous Ropes and Knots fold-over clutch from his new collection, which was inspired by the old boatyards of Bristol’s floating harbour and would I’m sure be Amber Butchart’s ideal nautical handbag. Further products – including new menswear and bridal collections – are being released in May, so I’m looking forward to seeing what else this creative designer has up his sleeve.
