Review: Starlet by Curvy Kate

Starlet set in Petrol, by Curvy KateThose lovely ladies at Curvy Kate have been at it again, designing gorgeous underwear that I just can’t wait to get my hands on! When I first saw the Starlet set in a gorgeous teal shade with purple trim that they’ve called ‘petrol’, I knew I had to have it. Not only does the bra have the moulded cups that I love so much, but it also comes with high-waisted knickers as well as a thong. Those of you who have read my lingerie reviews before will know that I am a massive fan of big pants. Not only are they super comfy to wear and extremely flattering on me, but they’re also far more glamorous than you might think. Especially these ones with their gorgeous colours and sparkly star charm.

The Starlet bra is available up to a J cup (depending on your band size), and the thong and briefs come in UK sizes 8 to 20, so I went for my usual 32E and sized up in the knickers to an 18 as elastic that digs in is nobody’s friend. Seriously people, forget the number on the label when it comes to pants and just go with whatever feels best. It will not be a decision you regret.

Starlet set in petrol, by Curvy KateThe set was a great fit, with Curvy Kate’s usual sturdy band and wide fully adjustable straps ensuring that the bra hugged me in all the right places, and the knickers smoothed over my hips and tummy perfectly. If you’ve never tried high-waisted knickers before, I would definitely recommend a pair of Starlet ones to start you off. The microfibre fabric on the back and sides is so super soft that you’ll forget that your entire bottom is covered. The bow and charm on the briefs didn’t show through my clothing as much as I thought it might, and so I opted to wear the set with tights and a rather form fitting outfit. Although the bra is a little more flattening from the side than some of my other moulded cup bras, this didn’t detract from its overall appeal, due to the lovely smooth shape and great cleavage. As you can see from the photo on the left, it’s got real wow factor!

However, by the end of the day I noticed that the top edge of the cups wasn’t quite right. The top layer of fabric appeared to be slightly smaller than the lining, meaning that the cups dug in to my breasts a little bit. It wasn’t uncomfortable but the resulting bulge was quite noticeable under a clingy top. At first I wondered if I’d not adjusted the straps correctly (or if I’d eaten so much cake that I’d gone up a cup size!), but then I wondered if I’d perhaps got a faulty garment. I spoke to Himare at Curvy Kate about this, and she asked me to return the bra so that they could take a look, before offering to send me a replacement in a 32F. This was all that was needed to ensure that the bra sat smoothly under my clothes, so I would definitely recommend sticking with your usual band but going up a cup size in this style. Curvy Kate always listen to customer feedback and so they are already planning improvements to the fit of this fantastic moulded bra.

The Petrol Starlet set is definitely a firm favourite of mine and I shall have to get myself more pairs of matching pants to ensure that I get maximum wear out of it. You can buy the bra, briefs and thong from Brastop. If you’re not a fan of this colour, it’s also available in classic black and bold scarlet.
