Blackbird Underpinnings describe themselves as having a fresh approach to intimate apparel. They got in touch with me because they thought their ethos of confidence, self-expression and authenticity was something that would appeal to the readers of Rarely Wears Lipstick, and I think they might be right. This interesting new lingerie and loungewear company are based in California and are currently raising money to produce their debut line via a Kickstarter campaign.
The line will be manufactured in San Francisco, as supporting the local economy and apparel industry is a key part of Blackbird Underpinnings’ mission. The five styles in the MAVEN Collection are named for iconic women who broke through social barriers to exercise unapologetic self-expression: Édith Piaf, Anaïs Nin, Josephine Baker, Marlene Dietrich, and Coco Chanel. As represented by these avant-garde women, confidence, creativity, and authenticity are key elements of the Blackbird Underpinnings brand. “Blackbird Underpinnings sends a message that I think resonates with a lot of people,” says Designer and Co-Founder Marin Camille Hood, “it celebrates the unique beauty in every woman by promoting self-expression and authenticity.”
Inspired by Paris in the 20s and 30s, the five pieces in the debut line are a silk teddy, camisole, bloomers and bralette, plus some gorgeous crushed velvet knickers. Each style will be available in two color ways (black & champagne/gold), in sizes XS, S, M, L, and XL.
As well as producing beautiful lingerie, Blackbird Underpinnings is also promising to host regular events that feature lush ambiance, swanky cocktails, live performances and more. This is one of those many times when I start to wish that London and California weren’t so far apart! These events will build a community around the brand whilst offering an opportunity to meet the founders, purchase Blackbird garments and get in on special promotions… all with a glass of champagne in hand, of course. The company’s much-talked about first event in February 2013 attracted over 300 people and featured a live photographic performance. Blackbird Underpinnings’ next event in mid-November will celebrate the company’s Kickstarter campaign (running from 22nd October to 22nd November 2013) and will include some exciting new surprises. I shall try to get friend of a Rarely Wears Lipstick in there to tell us all what those surprises are.
In the meantime… spread the word! As well as checking out their video and pledging some money to their Kickstarter (which I’ll definitely be doing come payday), you can also check Blackbird Underpinnings out on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
