The A-to-Z of Accessories: Belt & Braces

For the feminine amongst us, belts can be added to pretty much any outfit you can think of. They can be skinny or wide, made from leather or elastic. They’ll add corset-like structure or a splash of colour to an otherwise plain outfit, or they’ll simply sparkle like jewellery. They can sit on your natural waist (the narrowest part of your torso) or on your hips, so it’s worth checking which it’s designed for before ordering online. Grab a retro belt from Vivien of Holloway, a modern belt from Topshop, or learn how to make your own. Belts can go with many outfits and be used across seasons. What’s not to love?

For those with a more masculine style – more Howard Moon than Vince Noir – belts are pretty much just used to hold your trousers up but there’s now far more variation in their look than ever before. You can get smart or casual styles, reversible belts and stylish splashes of colour. For those who live in jeans, there’s a belt buckle for every subculture… and some that look like they belong in the wardrobe of The Big Bang Theory’s Howard Wolowitz.

Of course, if it’s all about keeping your trousers up, you could opt for braces instead. Sometimes called suspenders in the US (although style blog TSBMen.com reckons this is only for the type that clip onto the waistband of your trousers), these shoulder straps can either look stylish or comical and so select yours with care. The hipster will find a great many suitable options at Topman or Americal Apparel, whereas the chap might want to head to Darcy Clothing who have a splendid selection of traditional braces. Want to wear the type that button to your waistband but are frustrated with your lack of buttons and/or sewing skills? Never fear, British Braces sell instant buttons! All you need to attach them is a hammer. Stress relief and style in one simple package.

    1. Thanks so much for that tip, Lesley. Very useful. Great endorsement of the braces too. Right up my street 🙂
